We had a fantastic day over at the Marsh with 3 other schools, the children participated in a variety of different sports. There were sports leaders from local clubs including golf, tennis, hockey and cricket!

The Snail and the Whale
We had an amazing school trip to Canterbury to see the Snail and the Whale.
The children very much enjoyed the theatre show, joined in with all the songs and story telling parts. They were incredibly well behaved, and we were really proud of them.
The second part of our trip was to the Templemen Library. We were shown around in groups to see the vast number of books they have, the different areas within the library and then we got to take out books using a special computer, and see how they were sent back!
Thank you so much for supporting our trip.
Happy Father’s Day
Thank you to all those who attended our Father’s Day afternoon in Year One. We were truly overwhelmed by the number of dads, granddads, mums and sisters who were able to make it!
The children had a wonderful time showing their parents the classroom, reading to them and not to mention the competitions that were had when making and decorating the wooden cars.
Thank you!

Term 6
We can’t believe it’s come round so quickly!
Term 6 is an exciting and busy time in Year One, our topic this term is WaterWorld and will be linked with our T4W text ‘The Snail and the Whale’. We are all very excited about our trip on June 29th to see the Snail and the Whale at the Gulbenkian Theatre in Canterbury. Through our topic the children will be learning about the water that surrounds us, the oceans and how important water is for our bodies.
In RE we’ll continue to learn about Judaism and our school value for this term is Truthfulness.
In Maths we will be learning about fractions, money, time, and developing our number skills to 100.
PE will continue to be on a Wednesday and we shall focus this term on Athletics, ready to show off our sporting prowess to parents at the end of the term!

How quickly can you read these?
Here are some quick documents to use online or print off to help support your child with the phonics screening which will take place in Week 2
Say to your child….
“Special Friends”
“Fred Talk”
“Say the word”
You’ll be amazed at how they can segment long words to read them – support them by looking for blends at the start of a word e.g. br (bright) st (stilt)
The Royal Wedding Celebrations
We had a fantastic afternoon on Friday celebrating the Royal Wedding.
Have a look at the photos!
Websites for Phonics
Here are some websites that you can use to help your child to read words in preparation for their phonics screening next term!
Remember in school we always remind the children with the phrases:
‘Special friends’ (this means children need to look for the two or three letters that make one sound i.e. air, ew, ow, igh)
‘Fred Talk’ (this means children need to segment or sound out the word after finding the special friends. i.e. ch-a-t / f-l-ow-er)
‘Say the word’ (this means children need to now blend the sounds together to make a word)

Our New Romney Visit
Whilst looking at buildings this term we went for a walk around New Romney.
The children had the challenge to find out if there were more detached, semi-detached or terraced houses in and around the High Street, we looked at the different types of buildings and looked at what they were made out of.
Here are some of the buildings we found:
Phonics Club on Tuesdays
We are supporting our children through phonics Club on a Tuesday afternoon, they’ve been working really hard this term and their progress is phenomenal! This week it was so hot that we took our club outside. The children focused on ew, ow, and ai/air sounds. We found objects that had those sounds in, played water games and practised writing them. Well done to you all!
