The Papaya That Spoke

This week we have been learning the story of the papaya that spoke through the T4W approach as Mr Dale explained in our newsletter this week. Here is the story map that we have been using in class, see if your child can tell you the story using actions.papaya that spoke story map

As well as learning the story we have been focusing our guided reading to look at the story in more detail.

The children also had a chance to taste a papaya – it was more of a hit than we were expecting!!

Next week we will begin to adapt the story, focusing on a pineapple! We will be trying pineapples on Monday, so please let us know if your child has an allergy.

Please make sure your child had a PE kit for Monday and suitable clothes for the weather – its meant to be to be getting colder 🙂

We are of course always trying to improve our achievements in Year One, with the focus on our Phonics Screening at the end of the year we really appreciate you reading with your child every night for 10 minutes as this is proven to make a huge difference to their progress in both reading and writing – Thanks as always for your continued support!

Happy New Year from the Year 1 Team

Bird Feeders for our IPC Topic

Over the last few weeks we recorded how many birds we saw in our playground. Having struggled to find many we decided that by making bird feeders we could entice the birds into our outdoor area.

The children have been able to use junk modelling to create their bird feeders, we have used out fine motor skills to thread cheerios onto pipe cleaners and Mr Common came in to help us build some wooden bird feeders that we will be hanging around the school!

We hope you enjoy the photos as much as we have enjoyed our activities!

Sending Letters

On Tuesday morning at 9:30am we went out of the school with the slow teachers. Miss Common’s mum was too fast. We walked to the post box, it was very tall, Keira and Jack couldn’t reach. Written by Joseph W Year 1

We used poppy based activities to help improve our fine motor skills.

Our class poppy wreathes were taken to the New Romney celebrations on Sunday

Tuesday’s visit to the postbox

Friday 11th November

Dear Badger and Otter Parents and Carers,

We have had a busy start to Term Two, and the children have already produced some excellent work.

This term, as you know, we are reading the Jolly Postman. All of our literacy work is based on the story and over the last two weeks we have enjoyed learning how to write letter and postcards with descriptions and questions.

To make our learning fun and exciting it seemed right to include the opportunity to send real letters through the post!

On Tuesday 15th November we will be taking the children to post their very own letters in the letterbox in New Romney. We ask that on this day the children have a waterproof coat and sensible shoes – please provide wellies or boots if it is as wet as it has been this week!

Please record when the letter arrives at your house so that we can plot who’s arrives first!

Thank you so much for your continued support.

Kind Regards

Miss Common, Miss Neilly and the Year One Team
